Now that we know that Windows 8 will be released in the near future, and certainly some time in this year, as a business manager or a company owner, you are probably concerning yourself with the cost of the download and the Windows 8 key (the code needed to legitimise your copy and allow installation to complete). For those who know a little about software, there are some options that will probably come about to reduce that cost. At the same time, you can expect there to be radical improvements in Windows 8 to help the way you and your people communicate and do business. Windows 8 is the signal that radical changes in personal computing are about to take place. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages that have been promised, demonstrated and expected.

- Browser Based.Put in the simplest terms, Windows 8 will have a lot of functionality with browser-based usage. This means that applications supplied live to your PC when you are online, will function very well on the Windows 8 system as a whole. This is a signal that more is to come. This is very good for business as having your system, software and company data on a server and your people’s machines are just accessing that server. Those types of applications and that data is becoming the norm. You can expect the applications produced by software companies to improve in terms of quality, speed, function and number.
- Cloud Computing.Apple has just released iCloud, Amazon has a limited release.Google is pushing ahead with Google Documents and more. Windows 8, as stated above is an operating system that is designed to work well with online ‘floating’ applications in mind. Microsoft is essentially releasing the first operating system to function well in terms of cloud computing. Expect there to be a boom in services and what Microsoft has on offer soon. Cloud computing will take the way companies can manage their information to the next level.
- Touch-ability. Depending on your business, the touch-screen features and nature of Windows 8 will make operation of your machine easier and more practical. Tablets have become popular with many retail and F&B businesses because of this reason. While you will need to acquire touch-screen to use these features, after release of the operating system, we can expect a boom in touch-centric devices and a drop in the retail cost of touch-screens. Many more applications and software will incorporate or be based on touch-screen interface, and not the limited amount, there is now. This will result in greater variety, options and better cost of these types of applications available for business. Currently, most of those applications, such as one for a restaurant, are very specialised and expensive.
If you are confident with a computer and using Windows, or you have a number of people in your company who are, being a beta-tester is a good idea. A beta tester is someone who uses the first commercial release of an application or operating system and agrees to give feedback to the producer so the application or operating system can be tweaked for full public release. If you do this for Windows 8,it will probably result in a considerable discount or even free copies when the full version is released. This might be a good way to reduce your costs, see the operating system in action, and see how it can open up new doors for the way you and your people do things. Keep your eyes close to the Windows 8 forum in your country, and make sure you can take advantage of what is happening and can be aware of what Windows 8 could do for your business.
