Tags: Pool cleaning is often considered an ordeal. It’s very much oversold as a problem. A simple basic routine will make maintaining your pool so easy you’ll find you’re only doing some very simple things for a few minutes a week. Even the “technical” things like the pool cleaner work will be no big deal. Pool maintenance is as simple as you make it.

Basics of pool maintenance
The key to doing anything well is establishing a good routine. For pools, the basics are very easy to do regularly and they’re very straightforward.
1. Remove debris, leaves etc. from the pool area.
Pool areas naturally collect any debris from trees, windblown materials, etc. That’s very avoidable if you simply make a habit of picking up what’s around every so often. It cuts down the amount of materials. Windfall materials in Autumn can be avoided almost entirely with a pool cover. A sun shade will keep nearly all of the windborne materials out of the pool. Just pick up any visible materials around the pool.
2. Check out the water regularly
Visual observation and keeping an eye on any discoloration on the tiling will tell you if there are any problems. Any stains, usually green or brown, mean algae. Other stains may mean acidity. When you’re in the water, how does it feel? If it seems OK, it probably is. You should still do a pH test at least once a month, preferably once a fortnight.
3. Cracks or split tiles
The pool needs to be physically checked for any signs of damage. Accidental impacts can split tiles and in some cases structural weak spots can create problems by allowing water into the wrong places. The critical issue is possible leaks. Don’t allow any damage to get worse. Leaky pools can do unbelievable damage to the soil around houses, and affect supports and foundations. That’s extremely expensive. Make sure you get some qualified assistance in checking out damage.
4. Pool equipment
Make a point of checking these things at least once a week:
- Pool pump
- Pool filters
- Pool cleaners
- Water connections
- Do a regular physical check of these systems. The basic rule is that anything which looks different should be checked out.
- Electrical systems which smell of ozone, or that unforgettable “burnt” smell will need professional help.
- The water connection can be a problem if there are leaks. You can waste incredible amounts of water when filling or topping up a pool. Make sure the area around the water connection is dry, and there’s no sign of any water damage in the area.
- Pool filters need to be checked for clogging. That can make your pump and other systems extremely inefficient in a hurry. It also means more work if you don’t do it regularly.
- Pool cleaners should be working perfectly. These things are extremely tough, but exposure over time means they need to be watched.

Important: If anything needs fixing, do not attempt to fix it yourself. The risks of more and very expensive damage aren’t worth it.
