Treating yourself to a new sofa is a big deal. It’s an integral part of many people’s homes and lives – and not a choice you should rush into. Sofas mean family time – even if your family is just you and the cat. There’s something so much nicer about sitting on a sofa rather than an armchair. The main thing is that you have room to share it with someone else – or you stretch out on it by yourself, of course.

In our house, our corner sofa is our pride and joy, and although it’s old and battered now, with saggy cushions, the thought of trading it in for a younger and more attractive model is not something we’re ready to consider. It takes five minutes of thorough beating to get it to look anything like orderly, but it’s not the end of the world as most of the time, it’s only the family that sees it.

However, the time will come to trade it in for a new one – not least because the fabric is getting a bit shiny in places.

So, I’ve been looking around at the most popular shapes in the sofa shops today and think our next purchase might be one of those recliner sofas that you see in pretty much every furniture shop these days. True, they look like they give perfect support to the user, but you can’t push them against the wall; otherwise the headrest can’t recline properly.

I’ve also been thinking about the practicality of a sofa bed. We often have unexpected overnight guests and as we don’t have a guest room, we usually have to make a bed of the sofa cushions anyway. Perhaps that’s the answer – I should kill two birds with one stone and get a guest bed and a new sofa in one go. I’ll take my wallet next time I see an ad for a sofa bed sale!
