Moving day can be an extremely tiring and stressful experience. The more you can do in advance to ease the pressure the better. Our tips will help you to make sure that when the removalists turn up to take your possessions to your new home you are still in a state of relative calm.

Cull your possessions
As soon as your plans to move are finalised, take the opportunity to sort through all your possessions and cull what you no longer need. This serves two purposes. Firstly, it acts as the first physical step in the move. This means it will bring home the reality of what you are about to do, thus reducing the chances of a shocking realisation nearer the time. Secondly, most of us have far more possessions than we really need, a lot of which are really nothing more than junk. By culling the junk we will make the packing process, one of the most arduous parts of any move, far easier to do.
Pack in good time
Even if you have culled your possessions in advance, packing up your house is a major process. It is bound to take longer than you anticipate, so allow as much time as is practicable. There is nothing worse than frantically trying to get the last of your possessions into boxes on the day of the move while the rest are being loaded into the truck. Your removalists won’t thank you for it either.
Defrost the freezer
Don’t forget to defrost your freezer before the big day. It may seem a small point, but it is certainly one that is easily overlooked. Transporting electrical goods that are dripping with melt water is not a good for the rest of your possessions and nor is it much fun for the people doing the moving.
Organise change of address notifications
Deciding to move house doesn’t mean that you are choosing to cut yourself off from all your friends, or the companies you do business with, so organising change of address notifications is a necessary step. It is still very important though to arrange to have your mail forwarded to your new address. Inevitably some people will be slow to update their address books or databases.
Connect and disconnect utilities
Make sure that you organise disconnection of all utilities on your last day in your old property to avoid paying the bill for the new occupant’s usage. And don’t forget to organise connection in your new home too.
Organise parking
It is very important to think about where your removal truck is going to park, both at the property you are leaving and also your new home. A removal truck needs a lot of space and if you are not careful it might end up quite a distance away from your property, which is not fair on whoever is doing the packing and unpacking.
Book a good removalist
With a bit of research you can find some great local and interstate removalists, and employing one will make your move far less stressful. As well as transporting your belongings safely and efficiently there are many other services that removalists offer these days, including cleaning, storage and even packing.
